Phonics
We at Tennyson Road believe that early reading is fundamental to your child’s development. Having secure phonic knowledge equips each child with tools to decode all words big or small. To enable our pupils to become fluent and confident readers we follow Ruth Miskin’s Read Write Inc programme.
The program starts as early as reception. We introduce 40+ sounds and children are taught to blend these sounds into words. As they progress through key stage one they learn to read the same sounds with alternative spellings.
Fun and engaging books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and as children re-read these stories throughout the week they learn to read with a storytellers voice.
Elements of spelling and handwriting are also part of our daily phonics lesson. Children are given regular opportunities to develop their ideas, vocabulary and grammar linked to the storybooks they read from the programme.
Together we embark on this journey in fostering a love for reading.
