Tennyson Primary School

Maths

We believe that Mathematics should be fun, enjoyable and part of everyday life. It should also be challenging and provide a sense of achievement for all children.

Maths teaching is given a high profile at Tennyson Road, as part of a mastery approach to the curriculum. Maths involves confidence and competence with number and measure. It requires an understanding of the number system, sound computational skills and an ability to solve number problems in a variety of contexts.

Maths is taught as a discrete subject for between 45 and 60 minutes daily, following the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach.

The practical problem - solving aspect of Maths has a high priority throughout the school, which can be used as a means of developing a sound understanding of mathematical concepts. We aim to teach a practical, investigative, problem solving and reasoning lesson once per week, using a range of resources and contexts and related to real life whenever possible.

We have a wealth of resources from Rising Stars publishers and subscribe to top educational apps and websites, such as TT Rockstars, Mathletics and Sumdog. Children are encouraged ask questions and initiate their own enquiries to deepen their understanding. We aim to give our pupils engaging opportunities to learn, both collaboratively and independently, as well as practising and consolidating their learning at home.
