ART

Title

INTENT

Our Art Curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive; enabling children to strengthen both critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

Our aim is to allow children to express and develop their ideas and emotions, that help children to grow and stimulate their creativity. This opportunity to express themselves through art will help them gain the capacity of memory, attention and concentration acquiring social skills and their self-esteem.

Our aims are for all pupils to:

  • Develop children’s skill and level in observational drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • For children to demonstrate a good understanding of the colour theory they have learnt in both the current and previous year groups.
  • For children to articulate the process of creating their art and considerations of line, colour, technique that they are applying to their work.
  • To reinforce 3D art and textile skills through cross-curricular application. - Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • Enable children to present their work independently in their art books. Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

IMPLEMENTATION

Expectations for curriculum planning at Tennyson Road follow two phases (long term and short term). Through our Eduu.school extensive planning we teach a skills-based art curriculum, which allows children to express their creative imagination as well as providing them with opportunities to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture.

This is supported through the studying of key artists and the development of a knowledge of their work.  The children will cover an art topic at least once every half term and most year groups have art included extensively in some of the terms.

They will also have additional opportunities to engage with art and design activities throughout the school year. Our art lessons are linked closely to cross-curriculum topics, to ensure relevance and context. Re-teaching skills throughout the children’s time in Tennyson. Skills are revisited and honed into, which progresses in terms of depth and challenge, to build on the children’s previous knowledge.

At Tennyson we ensure that each child develops their skills and techniques in a way appropriate to them, through support, active and purposeful experiences, and using a variety of art materials and teaching strategies.  The evidence of their work is collected within the art sketch books and artwork is displayed in classrooms and around the school and celebrated on our school social media.

IMPACT

At Tennyson Road our priority is to ensure our children reach their full potential. Therefore, we use assessment tools to recognise the pupils’ knowledge progression and abilities. Our aim is to ensure essential Art skills and knowledge are embedded to aid future progression in upper year groups. We gather information through the use of questionnaires; demonstrating pupil’s and staff’s strengths, achievement, knowledge and areas that require improvement. We also advocate a Formative Assessment in our school. We do this by carrying out sketchbook scrutinies and unpick each child’s journey and development from the lessons. This will provide SLT and the Art lead the opportunity to ensure all children are successfully reaching the ‘National Curriculum’ goals and expectations. All teachers observe the pupil’s on-going progression with our live marking during lesson times.

ENRICHMENT

We proudly display the children’s work and creations around the school, and we promote developing stimulating classroom displays. We celebrate their achievements through our whole school assemblies and our school social media. Consequently, this reflects the children’s sense of pride in their artwork, and they are able to take ownership of their learning.

Art

At Tennyson Road we support the arts and we are currently working towards an Artsmark accreditation, which means we celebrate art, music, culture, theatre, film and dance through our curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Children enjoy being inspired to create and experiment with different mediums and materials and learn new skills whilst exploring their imagination.

In art lessons, key stage one children will learn sketching and drawing skills, how to use colour, tone and shading to create different effects, use clay, use ICT to create art and begin to discuss famous artworks and artists. Throughout key stage 2, art lessons progress so that children build on their early skills with printing, use of line, tone, colour and shape to show movement and more in-depth study of art, artists and designers.

We hold ‘Art Week’ each year where each year group studies the work of an artist in detail and produce their own artwork in response. We also regularly produce whole-class pieces of work in response to cross-curricular stimulus helping children to express their creativity and explore a wider culture.
