Welcome to Dove class! We are regularly updating this page with pictures and information about the exciting things we have been getting up to! You will also find links to educational websites which I think are fantastic.
I hope you enjoy browsing our page!
'Is there Life on Mars?'
Yesterday in Year 5 we were very lucky to be visited by Clare Warren (a space ambassador from ESERO) who taught us fascinating facts about MARS!
She told us that even though there isn't any oxygen on Mars, many people believe that there might be other gases on Mars which would allow micro-organisms to survive. So, with this knowledge, we were allowed to test three different 'martian soils' to see if there really is life on Mars. We were testing for whether the soils were:
1.) Red/brown in Colour
3.) Had a range of different sized particles
4.) Contained salt
5.) Felt like powder (the texture of flour)
We had to work in a team to test the soils carefully. We were able to use skills we have learnt in science to help us, including: making observations, filtration and evaporating using heat! It was a fantastic afternoon and we look forward to testing the soils next week to see if any of them contain 'micro-organisms'. Come back to see what we find! In the mean time, have a look at the fantastic afternoon we had (we especially loved wearing our scientific safety goggles)...
We have loved Miss Doran teaching us French once a week! We have even been able to link our Space topic into our French lessons, by learning how to describe the planets in French.
We really enjoyed the French games, which helped us remember the French vocabulary!
In Dove class we have been exploring abstract art by the artist Peter Thorpe! He is a famous artist who produces beautiful pieces of abstract art focused on space! We discussed how Peter designs an abstract background using vivid colours and shapes and then uses contrasting colours in the foreground of the picture to make it really stand out. We noticed that in all of his paintings, the foreground had a space shuttle!
We couldn't wait to design our own abstract space art. We used oil pastels for the background and chose 4 colours which would stand out. Then on a different piece of paper we drew a space shuttle and used 2 contrasting colours - this was then stuck on top. We think our pictures are out of this world!
I hope you enjoy looking through some of our creations.
